A swap for those of us who love both knitting, felting and colour! (...perhaps even the odd drink requiring a coaster). ;)

I received a brilliant suggestion from Nikki (Mathaholic) this morning-- coasters! Why not have a swap featuring something flattish so that we can swap internationally?

There are so many patterns available for free on Ravelry-- and this one really inspired me: http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/coaster-2 What a great opportunity to practice felting and using double-pointed needles, while still being simple enough to include those who are just beginning with the craft. There is no need to use the prescribed yarn-- anything with a decent amount of wool will felt up properly. If you need an idea of the felting process, check out this link: http://knitting.about.com/od/felting/ss/howtofelt.htm

My idea is that we can each knit one of these out of scrap yarn, and send it along with a note. It might be the story of the yarn (did you knit a sweater for your boyfriend, leg warmers for your pug or a pair of socks for your mum? What made you love the yarn?), a favourite quote, another cute knitting pattern or link, a love story or just a note of introduction.

Personally, I have so many odds and ends in my own stash that every time I reach into it, I am reminded of some neat project that I had otherwise forgotten. What a great opportunity to broaden the knitting community here on Swap Bot as well as use up some of our odds and ends.

I will be checking profiles prior to assigning partners-- please have a look at the pattern before you sign up to ensure that you are comfortable with the skill level that it requires. Newbies are welcome, but must have completed profiles. Otherwise, a 4.5 rating is required with no 1s or 3s in the past four months.

This will be a lot of fun, with more small project swaps to follow-- as always, please feel free to message me or comment below with any questions. Happy knitting!

This will be my first craft swap and my first real felted project, so I'm taking "Newbie's Welcome" seriously, please don't partner me with someone who demands an awe-inspiring masterpiece.

Looking forward to it.

Welcome, b0tswap! :) I would assume that anyone who joins a 'newbie' swap understands that they may receive something that is a little more organic, rather a perfectly developed piece. Of course, if you encounter any issues (in the pattern or otherwise), please do let me know.

I'm pretty new and I've gotten through two since last night :)

SpaRroW25 09/15/2010 #

And if I can do it, anyone can.... trust me!

arianneroxa 09/15/2010 #

I am just about to start in on mine as well-- thanks for the encouragement, SpaRroW25 :)

I respectfully request brightly colored coasters ^.^ But if you've already made them, more power to ya and I'll love them just the same.

Hopefully I get your name then! (If not, I will be madly knitting a more subdued coaster at the last minute)

Great swap. I only crochet. If I decide to join, is that okay?

Not sure the timing is good, a week is short these days. :)

I'm sure that the felting process would work well with crochet as well-- it would be really interesting to see. Please do join if you find the time.

I'd love to join this swap but I'm going to be away for the time it takes place. I'm looking forward to seeing more swaps like this in future!

Im a newbie to knitting, are there any super easy patterns for coasters out there?

arianneroxa 09/24/2010 #

Ravelry (www.ravelry.com) has a few-- although for an easy pattern, you might just knit a (square) swatch out of feltable wool, and then felt it. Depending on your gauge, you would likely use about 30 stitches, knit for about 30 rows, and then felt the sucker.

While wandering Ravelry, I also found this one: http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/plaid-felted-coaster -- which could be done with just the one colour, rather than the two that is mentioned.

Good luck!

*** Address change ***

Hiya, whoever is posting to me, I've updated my adress. Don't worry if you've sent to the old one, it will go to my parents house, just means it will take longer to get to me :)
