Description:

For this swap we will have two partners and we will make each partner a 12 x 12 inch quilt block with the pattern for this month. Make sure you leave a quarter inch seam all the way around, so the square actually ends up being 12.5 x 12.5 inches.

This month's pattern is the Double Z Block.

Here is the link.

This pattern is exact for the size and dimensions, so no changing is necessary.

February color is purple (amethyst). You may use a combination of dark/light purple fabrics (no solids, please), or purple in combination with white or cream.

QBOTM GUIDELINES

  • If you join the QBOTM, you don't have to stay in it for each round. It's not a requirement that you join each month.

  • Make sure the fabrics are all 100% cotton fabrics and blocks are 12.5 by 12.5 inches when finished.

  • If you flake on any of these swaps you will be banned from future QBOTM swaps and I will report you to the group founder. We don't want swappers like that in this group.

Any questions, be sure to pm me and I'll be happy to answer them.

Wonderfully done @TC

Oh yes - I still have some troubles with the January block....but I will manage (and learn). Can I use a shade of pink or is purple more like violet?

TC 01/ 7/2010 #

@monaw2008 , purple is more like violet. :) We'll use pink later in the year, though!

ozduchess 01/ 9/2010 #

Yay from a confessed purpleaholic:)

monaw2008 01/ 9/2010 #

Well, then Iร‚ยดll have to get some purple fabric....(now I have a reason to buy more fabrics - yeah)

pumpkinniki 01/16/2010 #

I bought purple when I bought last month's fabric. However, I'm not really a fan of this pattern. Watching for now.

I'm going to have to back out of this one. I can't seem to get January's block to the 12.5 x 12.5 measurement. And don't want to fail on this one too. I will be practicing and see what happens. I don't want my ratings to go down so I'll play it safe for now.

ladydy5 01/26/2010 #

We are not perfect craftlover so do the best you can. If this is for expert quilters, then its not for me. I don't believe that so I am doing mine and hope for the best 12.5 I can do.

TC 01/26/2010 #

Craftlover, I just made up January's block and discovered it's really not a beginner's block, and I apologize for that. Please give this one a try; if you can't get it to size, you and I can set up a private swap.

Craftlover10101 01/29/2010 #

LOL Ya'll are sweet! Um Ladydy5 I'm sure no one is expecting expertise but I'm a bit hard on myself when it comes to what swaps require and what work I put out. lol I have learned a few tricks from TC and my partners from the Jan. swap and will give this one a go. But it will be a test go lol. If it turns out yeah! I'll send them in the swap. lol Happy Swapping and ty ladies. And no need to appologize TC I joined the swap so there is no need to appologize honest!

Craftlover,
If I would have known this sooner, I would have sent you my templates that I made for the Jan swap. Mine ended up the right measurements. I will do the math and post a fail proof one for the Feb block if you would like? I didn't join this one because I don't like pinwheels in quilts, but I don't mind taking a look-see.

pumpkinniki 01/29/2010 #

Wow! I guess I didn't realize the leap between the difficulty levels of the two. I wasn't really looking at this pattern since I wasn't planning on doing this one. This is definitely a beginner pattern. I don't usually look at the patterns. (I didn't on this one, either.) But using the same method I used last month (my usual mathematical dork method lol), if you used cardstock and made a 4in X 4in square (make sure all angles are 90 degrees...aka a perfect square) and you cut a perfectly straight line from one corner to the opposite corner, you would have the triangle template for ALL the pieces of the Feb block. and you would have a 1/4 in seam allowance already included on all sides of all pieces resulting in a 1/4 in seam allowance on all 4 sides of the finished block. (12.5 X 12.5)

Make 16 of these in both colors (32 total) and sew the long side of the light triangles to the long side of the dark triangles making 16 little squares.

Arrange the little squares as shown in the picture as you sew them into 4 medium squares that are 2 little squares by 2 little squares in measurement.

Sew these 4 medium squares into a pair of rectangles, then into the final big square.

I hope this helped and didn't over complicate things. LOL

Wow Pumpkinniki thanks for the help. I'm going to try it today and see what happens. I appriciate all of that hard work in typing and figuring it out. tytytyty

pumpkinniki 01/31/2010 #

No problem. :)

pumpkinniki 01/31/2010 #

FFR- Any of these I participate in, I would gladly mail my templates (along with a reply letter) in exchange for a friendly letter or PC saying hi or whatever. ;) Or if I don't participate, I am still willing to help. :)

Just finished one block and boy it is not for beginners. Cutting was okay but putting the blocks to gether was a little time consuming. Must have ripped out blocks three times. Should have read what pumpkinniki said first. Don't know why Jan. block was easy for me (a quilter for a year now) and this one harder.

TC 02/ 1/2010 #

@Pumpkinniki is right; if you read the directions carefully, you'll see the block is comprised of 16 small half-triangle squares which are all assembled the same way. The trick is how you sew them all together.

When I made mine, I sewed the little squares together in rows, rather than in 4 medium squares. Either method works. (And @ladydy5 , if it's any consolation, when I sewed my fourth row of little squares on, I put it on upside down and had to rip it out.)

Again, I appreciate you all working so hard at making quality blocks!! And I am getting ready to post the March block which will be MUCH easier! ;)
