2020 Tulip of the month block USA

1-4-20 thru 1-25-20

-1 partner

--each block will be 6 1/2 inches when mailed

--1 Tulip block to in the tulip color of the month (block will be INCHES square when mailed)

All blocks will be made from the color print of the month with white background (tone on tone white is fine too), yellow centers and green leaves. You may use any print you want for your tulips if it is mostly the correct color for that month. Fabric = 100% cotton quilting fabric

Make 2 blocks each month, one for your partner and one for yourself. You will end up with 24 blocks at the end of the year. CUT per block (multiply by 2 each month for the 2 blocks suggested)

WHITE FABRIC for background

3 = 3 inch by 3 inches

2 = 2 ½ inch by 2 ½ inch (one for HST with color of the month, one for HST with green leaves)

1 = 1 ½ inch by 2 1/2 inches

1 = 1 ½ inch by 1 ½” for piece next to yellow tulip center

COLOR OF THE MONTH

1 = 2 ½ inch by 2 ½ inch

1 = 3 inch by 3 inches for tulip for HST with white

GREEN for leaves

1 = 3 inch by 3 inch

YELLOW for center of tulip

1 = 1 ½ inch by 1 ½ inch

SEWING

Step 1: HSTS: (half square triangles) for tulip and leaves, on wrong-side of both white 3X3 pieces draw a diagonal line from one upper corner to the opposite lover corner. Placing them right-sides together, put one white on top of the 3X3 color of the month piece, and one white on top of the 3X3 inch green piece. Stitch 1/4 inch on either side of the drawn line on each pair. Cut on the drawn line and press open both halves of each pair. Square up to 2 1/2 X 2 1/2 inches. Trick: be sure try NOT to use more than ¼ inch seam allowance rather than making the allowance any bigger.

Step 2: make unit 2 by stitching yellow piece to 1 ½ X 1 ½ inch white piece and press seam allowance toward the yellow

Step 3: make unit 3 by attaching unit 2 to the 1 ½ X 2 1/2-inch piece (see picture of tulip on swap for correct placement) press

Step 4: stitch top row = unit 3, one tulip HST, and one white 3X3

          Stitch middle row = one tulip HST, solid 3X3 color of the month piece, one leaf HST

          Stitch bottom row = white 3x3, one leaf HST, one white 3x3

Step 5: stitch all 3 rows together and press

Notes: You might want to cut your white background, green and yellow pieces in advance so they will be ready for the next month’s block.

I changed the number of partners to 1 instead of 2. I sure hope this will encourage others to join. I would love to have a quilt made from these blocks. I am making one of these blocks this weekend to see what size they end up and for practice.

I corrected the fabric cut sizes and made 2 of these blocks this weekend. They are so easy to make and turn out so cute. Each block will be 6 1/2 inches square when mailed. I can't wait to collect enough of these to make a full sized quilt.

I OWE everyone an apology on this swap. I had the instructions off a little, so I sure hope you were able to figure out my error. the HST's (Half square triangles) should start with the 3x3 inch white and the 3x3 inch color of the month for the tulip and the 3x3 inch white and the 3x3 inch green for the leaves, THEN YOU SQUARE THEM UP TO 2 1/2 INCHES. Please forgive me. Sorry! I have corrected it for future swaps.
