Description:

Last week, a boat believed to be washed away from Japan in the 3.11 tsunami was discovered off the coast of Oregon, US. In it were 21 fish, all of them native to Japanese coastal waters.

Here they are, at the Oregon Coast Aquarium. The curious individual at the window is the lone striped knifejaw. The rest of the fish are the yellowtail jacks pictured above.

Somehow, a small miracle has occurred.

It seems appropriate to honor these survivors with a fish flag similar to the carp flags flown on Children's Day / Boy's Day in Japan. koinobori

Google "koinobori" for carp flag images and ideas, or check out these tutorials:

1) Tammy Yee's version

2) mackenzie's version

3) Ine Beerten's version

4) Childhood 101's version

5) Zoom's version

6) Cell phone charm koinobori

7) Stuffie version

Make one fish flag or related object (cell phone charm, stuffie, or another object featuring a fish flag in the koinobori style) for one partner. Make sure that your flag in some way honors those amazing little fish survivors that were just discovered.

Just wanted to say, this is a REALLY beautiful idea for a swap. I wish I could take part, but I have a lot of work and other stuff coming up in the next few weeks, and I don't want to commit and then not have time to do a good job (especially as I've never made a flag like this before!). But thanks for sharing this strange and wonderful piece of news, and I hope you all have a really lovely time with the swap :)
