Description:

All the following refers to this very silly Monty Python sketch. Some of us are quite silly .

It has ceased to be, and has joined the choir invisible, and yet apparently there really was a Norwegian Blue Parrot -- it never did pine for the fjords, however.

In this very silly swap, you will create a Scandinavian Parrot (Danish, Finnish, Lappish, Swedish, or Norwegian, Icelandic as well, and possibly a generalized Viking Parrot if you are from York, the Shetland Islands, or plead your case well. US and Canadian residents and expats may refer to Thunder Bay, Iron Mountain, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, but only if you include a joke about lutefisk, saunas followed by running and jumping in Lake Superior, or something equally ridiculous to prove your credentials!) Your definition of what makes a parrot Scandinavian applies -- a Loki/ Frost Giant/ Odin/ Brunhilde/ Bergmann/ Pippi Longstocking/ folkloric costume or pattern/ dark and frozen crime fiction/ strong coffee, rice pudding and rommegrot/ sweater wearing/ famous fountain in Copenhagen/ gorgeous embroidered designs/ Viking helmet/ drinking at Valhalla/ beserker/ throat singing and reindeer herding/ cloudberry eating and aquavit drinking ... well, make it fun and fabulous.

Details: International swap, so choose a medium that you feel comfortable sending internationally. Paper is great, fabric patches can often be sent without extra postage or minimal extra postage, I like to make giant paper things and fold them into an envelope shape, but ornaments made from wood or polymer clay or felt are also nice and light, too. Have been rated for 5 type 3's, be an active swapper with great ratings, have a sense of humor and adventure about what you send and receive, and feel free to PM me if you would like a 1:1 swap or don't meet criteria.

About your host: My parents were the only non-Norwegians at the local Sons of Norway club that weren't dragged in by their spouses. I sat with the (mainly Irish and German) spouses and they snuck me extra gravy and potatoes to drown out the taste of the lutefisk.

Personally, I always wanted to be a lumberjack ...

phantomssiren 07/ 9/2014 #

rngstgstll 07/ 9/2014 #

rngstgstll 07/ 9/2014 #

Well, and mead.

nellswell 07/10/2014 #

Pining for the fjords!

rngstgstll 07/10/2014 #

@thaskett aren't we all? Also, Finland has it all!

rngstgstll 07/10/2014 #

I almost forgot all those Scandinavians who made it to the Pacific Northwest -- OK, you can refer to your Scandinavia, too :)

rngstgstll 07/10/2014 #

Did the Moomins ever meet a parrot?

plushiecat 07/10/2014 #

Ah, a pity this isn't US only! Happy swapping!! :D

Elin 07/10/2014 #

Pippi didnt have a parrot, but her dad was being watched over by a parrot in pirate prison. Pippi only had a monkey and a horse.

rngstgstll 07/11/2014 #

Thanks for that, Elin, I remembered a parrot in there somewhere, but clearly it was in the wrong location. So the parrot was probably NOT Scandinavian, but a South Seas parrot.

rngstgstll 07/11/2014 #

Lingonberries, did I mention lingonberries? Or that my daughter and I want to be this guy? I mean, really, he is so cool, cooking out on the fjords!

nancylee 07/11/2014 #

I know for the fish slapping dance you also did a US version if you do that here please let me know.

RooBaRoo 07/15/2014 #

I am from India ... can I join? ... I am trying to search up the Moomin connection with a parrot ...

88bluebirds88 07/16/2014 #

This is great! are there any size requirements? I would like to do cross stitch or embroidery but it will be quite small is that ok?

rngstgstll 07/17/2014 #

Oh, yes, RooBaRoo, please join, there are no restrictions on country, merely on what is classified as "Scandinavian" -- I realize that Minnesota is not in Scandinavia, but try explaining that to the local Sons of Norway club!

rngstgstll 07/17/2014 #

And do let me know about Moomins and parrots!

and 88bluebirds88, quite small embroidery and cross stitch sounds perfectly amazingly creative!

Holliander 07/17/2014 #

My Finnish grandmother did the silly walk in 'da U.P., 'eh.

Holliander 07/17/2014 #

... With St. Urho.

rngstgstll 07/19/2014 #

Awesome, forgot about St. Urho. Wonder if he knew any Moomins?
