Description:

For this swap you will use Shrinky Dink (shrinking plastic) material somewhere on your ATC, or even create your entire ATC with Shrinky dink material... as long as it measures 3.5 x 2.5.

You can find Shrinky Dink material at any craft store and I've even seen it at the dollar store.

If you cannot find it, you can use #6 plastic. This plastic is the kind of flimsy plastic that you find in the bakery department used for packaging donuts or the flimsy plastic covers found on aluminum foil pans.

How big do you think the starting project is needed to shrink to the size an atc card?

The link she left above talks about and answers your question.

Thanks @snuggles555

Thanks for answering @Snuggle555 Sometimes, just playing around with it is the best way too... save those first attempts and use them in another project, or send them as extras. Each attempt should be your best try... art is a matter of chances put together with a pleasurable eye... enjoy the mistakes!

I did it.... oh wow.... I did a henna themed shrinky atc and it is amazing! Wonder who will get it. It is not perfectly flat but its close enough.

@dyp , I had difficulty keeping them flat also, but something that helps is to press it down when it comes out of the oven until it cools completely. I'm glad you're having fun!! :)

This is fantastic!! I love shrinky dink plastic and I just did inchies with it that turned out really well so I'm totally on board for this swap. ::excited::

Inchies!! What a great idea!!!

jessielightyear 01/31/2014 #

@ManicPixieKat what was your ratio to get them down to an inch? I just did a test of an ATC out of the shrinky dink white plastic that I got from the craft store and it didn't shrink to 2.5x3.5. It said that it shrinks to 1/3 the size, so I multiplied the dimensions of the ATC by 3, but it was too big. (Plus I did a terrible job keeping it flat in the oven and it got stuck to itself!)

Jessie... the plastic will correct itself just leave it in longer... don't panic! And I discovered it's not difficult to cut the plastic after baking. You simply score a line where you need it to be and snap it off. This way, your calculations for shrinkage really don't need to be accurate. Good luck!

Thanks! Maybe I will try to get it unstuck again, if not, I'll just try again with a different one!

@jessielightyear you just have to play around with them. I did several test pieces. I started with one that was 3x the dimensions I needed then scaled back pieces after until I got it to the dimensions I needed. I believe for the inchies I ended up with them around 2.5X 2.5 unbaked. Also if you got the pure white, it shrinks down less than the frosted or clear.

I ended up just making it bigger and scoring/cutting it. Works well with the matte stuff but not the pure white stuff

Anyone else have their card crack in the post? I am wondering if the cold weather killed my card.
