Description:

For this swap, lets create a tape transfer collage. This is an easy mixed-media technique that allows for great layering and texture for any mixed media work. To complete a collage, choose images from magazines, books, or newspapers and by using scotch tape or packing tape to capture the whole or part of the images. Create one 4” x 6” (minimal) or larger collage using tape transfer techniques.

There are two techniques for tape transfer, leaving the paper backing on, or removing it to create a translucent image. This will allow you to play with transparency and layering in the collage.

The Technique:

A. To place an image that is not transparent:

  1. Choose an image. Place a piece of packing tape over the image burnish to attach the paper to the tape. When you pull the tape up the image will transfer to the back of the tape. If you like, trim the tape so that no paper is left uncovered by the tape.

  2. To attach the image to the collage, use clear gel glue or attach with more tape. (The tape layering will add a textured effect. Don’t be shy with the tape!)

B. To place a transparent tape image:

  1. Cut out selected image and cover with packing tape. Burnish the tape with the back of a spoon to adhere the inks to the tape.

  2. Place the tape with image into a bowl of water and soak for five minutes.

  3. After soaking, in the water bowl, rub off the paper fibers from the back gently with your fingers. The image ink will remain on the tape.

  4. Most of the time there will be enough tape sticky to place the image (once dry) directly to the collage. If not use clear gel glue or more tape to adhere to the collage

There are so many options with this technique. You can transfer part of an image and draw the rest. You can create a background and layer a collage on top. Or the collage can be nothing but tape transfer. You choose what works best for you. Artist’s choice! Most of all, have fun creating!
