Description:

I'm calling this a Type 3 because this is Serious. Science!

Inspired by my daughter's science project, which she designed, to discover how marshmallow Peeps (an American sugar and wax coated marshmallow candy) could be dissolved.

Here is the Serious Science Challenge.

Come up with an idea to test out. Make it fun. Use stuff that you have around the house. Write out a little research protocol for yourself and your fellow participants (Invite friends over for dinner! Draft your children! Tell your spouse or roommate or sister that it will be fun!).

Carry out your experiment. Take photos and record observations. Do a little research and come up with a theory as to what happened in your experiment. Don't worry -- you don't have to have all the answers.

Make a little brochure or mini-zine or letter-based presentation for your swap partner. Use fancy scientific words. Be serious about having a little fun with your photo captions. Admit that you ate a few of the marshmallow Peeps, or threw the ball around more than was necessary, or crashed the matchbox cars into each other for fun, or made the neighbors stare, or laughed really hard when the cat sat on your project.

Send your documentation of your experiment to your swap partner.

Smile. You are a Serious. Scientist. Put on that pair of sunglasses. Your cool-ness radiates around you!

Details: Have a great rating, or an explanation for rating issues for coordinator to consider. I will always angel my swaps, but prefer not to have to! I am willing to do a one-to-one swaps with newbies or folks coming back online after ratings problems if you are willing to show commitment to the Cause.

Awesome swap idea Tanya! I love the science project for grownups theme. I already know what I'm going to experiment with. So excited for this one!

Yay! I was hoping that you would see this swap ... and be one of the mad scientists! Bwa ha ha ha ha !

This sounds awesome but I need more inspiration. Post some ideas and I'll be in! Great thing to do with my 12 yo

I think the big idea is that there are no wrong ideas. I am working on something along the lines of "come up with something related to Batman (we are all fans of the classic TV show)", but I plan to have my family pitch in their ideas until we find something fun to try.

Maybe you and your 12 year old can brainstorm together ...

I will see if I can find some scientific brainstorming inspiration ...

Here is a scientific method clicky link, so that we all behave like the scientists we are as we are going about our experiments ...

And for the engineering types ...

Thanks, twobluecrows, for getting me back on track with clickylinks :)

I've been obsessed with cooking lately so I plan on doing some homemade yogurt experiments with different starter cultures. There are lots of cooking/science books on Amazon. I just got "Cooking for Geeks" and there has been lots of inspiration in there. Or you could investigate the microwaved water urban myth and prove that one wrong again.

The kitchen is a great place to experiment! I am determined to play with my Matchbox cars, which is why I was thinking Batmobile-related experiments (love that parachute) .. but my family usually comes up with something better than I do. It may involve research into making chickens run in a straight line, for all I know! I love brainstorming ... it is something that our family has a lot of fun with :)

What a splendid swap idea!

I am glad that you like it! Surreptitiously sign up?

Hmmm .... what if I send out "real" participation ribbons ...?
