Description:

Remember cootie catchers? They were those folded paper “fortune tellers that usually made the rounds during 5th grade recess. Well, we are going to create a more artistic version!

The challenge is to take the basic folded origami paper toy and then "art" it up. Get really creative with decorating/embellishing. You can use tyvek as a base (Idea courtesy of LMN) or interfacing with fabric or a page from a sturdy book.....or whatever else you come up with! NO RESTRICTIONS ON SIZE, STYLE, MEDIA, OR THEME. All I ask is that you approach it as ART, not as ("just") a playground game... If anyone would like to host a "cootie catcher" swap for children that would be wonderful, but I would like this particular swap to be approached as art for adults.

Here are the rules:

Make 1 REALLY "Decked" out cootie catcher

Open to all with a 4.8 rating or higher. No recent no sends.

No newbies (sorry)

THIS IS AN INTERNATIONAL SWAP

You can find BASIC instructions for the cootie catcher/fortune teller at:

It has been long since I made on of these I am going to have to refresh my memory and see if I can still make one before I join

wonderful idea for a different type of challenge and pretty easy to send as well

You can make these out of Tyvek so they are much more durable!

What a wonderful idea LMN! I was also trying to figure out how to make them more durable....I like to work with fabric so I was gonna try interfacing with my fabric!

Tyvek takes acrylic paint well too. I had thought about fabric and using Timtex...like a bowl, but thought that would be too stiff.

What a great idea! I made these when I was a kid and taught all my children how to make them when they were in grade school.

SadieGunSlinger 01/21/2008 #

I remember we use to have contests in my school to see who could make them the smallest!

I have mine all folded and I used a heavy weight scapbooking paper, so I hope that is OK? Hugs :-)

I just made a practice one out of scrapbook paper, it worked perfectly. If you make the first folds with the non-printed side towards you then the end product is entirely patterned except for the underside. [just incase anyone else was wondering]

After I decorated the practice one the scrapbook paper started tearing a bit in the very center... just a warning :)

Starwatcher 02/ 7/2008 #

Would laminating the scrapbook paper work? Or would it make it too hard to fold the way that is needed?

halfwaythere 02/ 9/2008 #

I don't know. I used a thiner piece of scrapbook paper and it worked much better, the cardstock type ripped.

Hi Audrey, I posted your fortune teller yesterday so keep and eye out in 7 to 10 days as it has to fly all the way from New Zealand. Hugs :-)

andysbabycakes, your Tyvek catcher was processed in its bubble-wap envelope form today. It's coming first class so it should reach you in a couple of days!
